The Wisdom of Elders: A Legacy Worth Preserving

Recently, I revisited the chronicles of Henry Plée, a true pioneer of European Karate, Judo, and various other martial arts.

If you haven’t explored his work yet, I highly recommend diving into his Martial Chronicles. These writings are often thought-provoking, sometimes frustrating — and as Plée himself liked to say, “if they challenge you, there’s something to explore.”

What struck me most during this recent reading is perhaps tied to my approaching 50s.

    When Experience Meets Ambition

Years ago, I witnessed a moment on the tatami that has stuck with me ever since.

A Grand Master of Jiu-Jitsu was rolling with a younger black belt.

The younger fighter, filled with drive and determination, was focused purely on winning — neglecting the importance of care and respect towards the elder.

The Master, with years of experience and deep technical knowledge, kept up with the young competitor. But it was clear — it came at a cost: fatigue and wear.

Why Rolling with Elders Is a Privilege

Training with seasoned practitioners is a unique learning opportunity. It allows you to sense the subtleties that raw strength alone cannot teach:

    • A precise hand placement
    • A subtle shift in pressure
    • Perfect timing
    • And those tiny, often invisible, details that define mastery

Sure, younger champions might overpower them or even secure submissions.

    But ask yourself:
    What’s the deeper lesson here?
What insight will you truly take away from this encounter with an “old-timer”?

    Strength Fades, but Strategy Endures

In our youth, we instinctively lean on our physical strength.

But with age, comes the necessity to adapt:

    • We compensate
    • We shift our mindset
    • And we refine our energy

Because, ultimately, it’s not about brute force — it’s about the wisdom and strategy that only years of dedicated practice can bring.

This is the essence of martial arts.

🥋 Respect: The Cornerstone of Transmission

It is only within an environment of respect that the senpai — the experienced elders — can continue to practice without fear for their health.

    Not to dominate.
    Not to prove a point.
But to pass on knowledge — a priceless gift earned through decades of dedication.

💬 The Timeless Wisdom of Henry Plée

“It’s not enough to master the technique. You must grasp the essence of the movement and, above all, respect the path walked by those who came before you.”Henry Plée
